Program Overview
The Community Health and Literacy program is a home-based family-centered program that sends trained mentors to visit families who have Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing children for two-hour weekly sessions during the school year to ensure they remain consistent with academic standards. The program prepares the family by teaching American Sign Language (ASL) to the child and family members and implementing ASL into their daily learning environments.
Most importantly, the mentors teach the children and families how to bridge ASL to English while reading and writing. The families have
educational access to:
• Reading and writing literacy
• Language acquisition
• Incidental learning environments
• American Sign Language
• Deaf Culture
