Program Overview

The program utilizes the Texas Curriculum, which was designed by the Texas Educational Agency and promoted by the National Institute for Literacy. Classes are taught in self-contained classrooms where degreed instructors use a holistic approach to immerse students in the language. The curriculum is coupled with a functional, “real-life" approach so that students can quickly learn new skills and practice their new found knowledge at home, at work, and in the community. The program currently operates year-round with an average of 3 ½ hours of instruction per day, five days a week. Appropriate curricula and variety of materials, focusing on math, social studies, science, writing, and language skills allow adults of varying educational levels to raise their academic levels. Initial assessments place students in appropriate classes, and periodic testing allows students to mark their progress towards achieving their goals.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

My name is Edith, and I am graduating. It is the day that many of us have dreamed of. I think it feels nice to wear a cap and gown as I have only seen pictures of other people wearing them. Finally, I will be able to show a picture of me wearing my graduation outfit. We all feel very proud of ourselves that, after difficult moments in Math, Science, and Social Studies, we have accomplished obtaining a GED diploma. This has all been possible because we could count on the skillful and caring teachers, the vision of the Director, and the help from the administrators. Everyone in our class has a different story with the same happy ending. They came to CFC looking for a better education. I came to Houston looking for a better life for myself and my sons, and I knew the first thing I had to do was learn English. I studied in some other places where I learned the first levels, but they had a limit. I continued looking for excellence, and I knew I had found it when I found CFC. It filled my expectations and I knew I was in the right place.
