BridgeESL

Program Overview

BridgeESL exists to live out welcome in our community by providing accessible, empowering English education for adults. We meet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30–7:15 pm at Jere Whitson Elementary School, creating a consistent and supportive space for learning and connection. Childcare is provided, removing a common barrier for families who desire to participate. Students contribute a $12 entry fee, and all remaining program costs are covered through generous fundraising efforts. More than just a class, BridgeESL is a place to grow in English skills and to build meaningful relationships. Here, students are encouraged, supported, and valued as they take each next step on their language journey—together with a caring community.

Catarina lived in the United States for eleven years before she ever stepped into an English classroom. During that time, she learned how to navigate daily life the best she could—often relying on others to translate, help with appointments, or speak up when words felt out of reach. When she heard about BridgeESL, she decided to try something new. Because Catarina cares for her grandchildren in the afternoons, our on-site childcare made it possible for her to attend class. What felt like a small step was actually a brave beginning. When Catarina first joined BridgeESL, she enrolled as an introduction-level student. She was quiet and often hesitant to speak. But week by week, something began to shift. Surrounded by patient teachers and encouraging classmates walking a similar journey, Catarina started to lean in. She focused closely during lessons and slowly gained the courage to participate.

Little by little, her confidence grew. Catarina began opening up in class and even inviting friends to join BridgeESL. Today, she rarely misses a class. She comes eager to learn, ready to practice, and excited to keep moving forward. The combination of solid education and a warm, welcoming environment has made BridgeESL a place she truly belongs.

Because of this growth, Catarina now feels more confident attending doctor's appointments and engaging with her grandchildren's schools. She carries less anxiety and more peace as she navigates everyday life. Catarina knows she is not alone on this journey—BridgeESL is walking with her every step of the way.
