Program Overview

About our Program

The Adult Continuing Education is a department of Brownsville Independent School District and the fiscal agent for Cameron County, which includes Los Fresnos, La Feria, San Benito, Harlingen, Port Isabel, Santa Maria and Santa Rosa. BISD Adult Continuing Education provides services to a multicultural population who are educationally and economically disadvantaged adults. Students can receive ESL, GED Transitions classes, Career Pathways Classes, and Certification for employment. These are offered by ACE through partnerships with YouthBuild, Texas Southmost College, Texas State Technical College and BISD's CTE Department.

BISD ACE provides teachers, technical support, training, data management, materials, assessment, registration and FTE's to Co-Op Sites and satellites within the community.

Our program is funded primarily through Federal and State grant dollars.

Our classes run from: 8:30 am - 11:30 am, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm Monday through Thursday, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Monday through Wednesdays for GED and ESL. Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Katherine (Brownsville)
"I really enjoyed being in the GED program at BISD. I attempted to study on my own for awhile but I would always get frustrated with it and felt like I was going nowhere. Getting back into a classroom and being taught is what really got me going and encouraged me to push myself. Having somewhere to go to learn really helped me feel like I could do it this time. The teachers here are amazing and really encouraging and I'm very thankful to Mrs. Young, her kind words are what helped me continue even after leaving BISD. My life is very different since getting my GED. Three days after my last GED test I decided to apply for college. I was accepted to TSTC in Harlingen and I'm currently enrolled in my second semester, and I am on the honor roll. I was really nervous about continuing my education and I almost backed out of it but my family helped encourage me to keep going and I don't regret a thing! I love being in college and learning about biology which is what I'm majoring in. I plan on transferring to a 4 year university after I graduate and eventually applying to medical school to become a doctor. My life looks so different now and I'm so happy that I have given my family something to be proud of. Being a 26 year old student, wife and mother of a 5 yr. old and 3 month old isn't easy but it's so worth it. I would tell them that no matter what is going on in your life take the time to make a plan of what you want to do. Decide how much time you can dedicate to getting your GED and pick a date to start. I know sometimes you will feel stuck and that it will never happen because I felt that way too. Just know that you can do it and you will feel so relieved once you do. Don't give up on your dreams and don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't or it's too late. Don't be too hard on yourself and be proud of yourself every time you pass one section because no matter what anyone says, passing even one section of the GED is an accomplishment."
