Program Overview

Birmingham Jumpstart, Inc. is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. As a grassroots organization, our mission is to serve the local community by providing learning curriculums that will improve and enhance the academic skills of our adult neighbors.

Our beginner literacy curriculum builds off the fundamental work of Laubach. His teaching methods have taught millions of people to read. Additionally, our literacy curriculum is ESL (English as a Second Language), and ELL (English Language Learners) friendly.

Our GED program prepares students for their High School exit exam. Our classes provide study materials, test-taking strategies, and practice tests. Scholarships are available to provide funds to take the GED test.

We offer classes Monday through Friday, in Bessemer and throughout the Birmingham area. All teen and adult classes are available at no charge, and we are open to the public.

Our ESL classes for teens and adults are ideal for the English Language Learner (ELL), who needs help with the acquisition and proficiency of the English language. Our ESL curriculum, combined with a structured format, is presented within an environment that stimulates and engages the ELL student through a practical approach.
