Basic Literacy/ESOL

Program Overview

Our mission is to support adults in building English, literacy, and life skills that promote confidence, independence, and a strong sense of community.

BASIC LITERACY:
Tutors teach reading and writing to English-speaking adults over the age of 18, who are out of school and reading below an eighth-grade level. Our tutors teach students one-on-one, and tailor the learning to the student's needs. Many students who reach their reading goals at DePorres P.L.A.C.E. go on to a GED preparation program and/or to college.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESOL)
Tutors teach conversational English to adults who speak little or no English.
Instruction is one-on-one or in small groups
Many students who have reached their goal of learning English at DePorres Place go on to gain US citizenship.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

A West Palm Beach native, David struggled in school and was never given the support he needed to learn to read. After a long career as a groundskeeper for the City and raising a family, David came to DePorres P.L.A.C.E. in 2018, determined to improve his literacy and earn his GED.

With the support of his tutor, Clare Wilson, David made remarkable progress. By 2020, he was writing essays and building confidence. In 2023, his acrostic poem “What Do You See?" was selected for publication in the Florida Literacy Coalition's essay book and he proudly read it at the statewide conference.

We are incredibly proud of David and excited for what lies ahead on his GED journey.
