Program Overview

Baraga Area Community Schools: Helping Adults Reach Their Educational Goals

Baraga Area Community Schools (BACS), a part of Baraga Schools, is making a difference in education across Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We run an Alternative High School and an Adult Education program to help people achieve their educational dreams.

What's New at BACS?

In February 2023, we began updating our Adult Education program and realized the need for these services is greater than we expected. By October 2023, we opened a GED testing center so individuals no longer had to travel long distances to Marquette or Iron Mountain. We also expanded our programs to help adults in Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties, where more than 3,000 adults are without a high school diploma or GED.

Last year, with just one staff member, we helped 21 learners work toward their educational goals, but there were more than 30 people on the waiting list. Thanks to a 107a grant we received, we can now grow our team and assist even more adults over the next two years!

How We Help:

BACS is one of five adult education providers in the Upper Peninsula and works closely with others in Carney-Nadeau, Engadine, Iron Mountain, and Ishpeming. Together, we address challenges adult learners face, like work schedules, family responsibilities, tough weather, and financial struggles.

To make learning more accessible, we offer:
  • Flexible options like in-person and virtual one-on-one tutoring.
  • Day and evening sessions to fit busy lives.
  • Support from retention specialists and coaches who help tackle obstacles to success.
Why It Matters:

Adult education changes lives by helping people get their GED or high school diploma, opening doors to better jobs, higher wages, and further education.
