Program Overview
Finding the right English class can change your life, and the Austin ISD Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program is here to help you succeed. Since the year 2000, our program has provided a welcoming space for adults in the Austin community to grow their skills. The best part is that all of our services are free of charge for every student.
Our program is open to everyone. You do not need to have children enrolled in Austin ISD schools to participate, we welcome neighbors from all walks of life. It does not matter if you already have a degree from another country or if you are just learning how to read and write for the first time; our teachers are ready to meet you where you are.
When you join our classes, you will work with experienced teachers who care about your progress. You will practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. We also provide technology, like Chromebooks and laptops, to help you learn.
We know that you have a busy schedule, so we offer many options for when and where you can study. We have class sites located in North, Central, and South Austin. These classes take place at local schools and public libraries so that you can pick a spot close to your home or work. To fit your lifestyle, you can choose to attend classes in either the morning or the evening. Most classes meet two or three times a week for a few hours at a time.
At Austin ISD, we believe in the power of our community. We provide a safe, supportive, and professional environment where you can gain the confidence you need to reach your goals.
