Program Overview
Since 1998, Ashe Family Literacy has been providing adult education, parenting education, Parent and Child Together time, and early childhood education for families of Ashe County. Hundreds of residents have benefited from this program, which provides instruction in Adult High School Diploma/GED and English as a Second Language. Based on a comprehensive family literacy model, we strive to meet the needs of low-income families by breaking through barriers, such as lack of transportation and childcare, and give them the education and skills to raise themselves out of poverty.

Quote from Juana:
"[The] ESL program has been for me very important, because it helped my children and me a lot, all what I know it's thanks to this program. When I started coming I didn't know English, just a few words, and it helped my children for kindergarten.
. . . Now the life is easier for me, I can take my children to their appointments and talk with people without translator, and as well I passed the citizenship that made me feel very proud of myself. One of my goals is to get the GED or High School diploma, [which] is why I still come to school, because I need to learn more English, and I like [it] because this way I know more people and have fun too. And I feel more happy. Thanks to those who are helping our program."
