Program Overview

The purpose of Anixter Center's Literacy Program is to strengthen the reading, writing, math and computer skills of adult learners with disabilities so that they may live in the community more independently, prepare for a competitive job with career advancement potential, and experience an enhanced quality of life in general. The Literacy Program provides training in ABE skills primarily through one-on-one tutoring and learner pairs but also in weekly small groups that cover beginning reading, computer skills and other topics, depending on the expressed interests of the adult learners. Upon requesting to join the program, an adult learner is given the SORT-R standard assessment. Based on the results of this assessment, the Adult Literacy Program Assistant develops goals and objectives jointly with each adult learner based on the SORT-R results and a Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) Plan to match the adult learner with a mode of instruction most likely to be effective.
