Program Overview
During the school year, immigrant and refugee women study English, job skills, citizenship and various electives in one of 6 levels for 12 hours a week.
While the women are learning, their children (ages 6-weeks to kindergarten) are also learning in the onsite preschool, American School for Children.
During the summer, the programs combine for our Families Learning Together program. Immigrant and refugee women learn parenting skills, learn the value of reading to their children, and are empowered to become their children's first teacher. Women have a class and then spend the rest of their morning working with their children (preschool and elementary) with the support of ESL teachers and early childhood educators.

Hana and her family arrived in Toledo as refugees from Iraq. She had been an English teacher and was very anxious to learn English and stand on her own two feet. She worked hard for two years in the American School for Women. Teachers supported her learning in and out of class. She moved from lower intermediate class to passing the TOEFL. American School teachers and staff encouraged her to dream big and slowly her self-confidence was rebuilt. She became a leader in the school and began volunteering in the community She is now a student at the University of Toledo actively pursuing her dreams.
