Program Overview

The Alvin ISD Ready program works directly with parents of preschoolers (3-5 years old) to demonstrate ways parents can help their children develop pre-literacy skills and reading readiness. The READY program also equip parents with the tools and resources to use at home with their children. The goal of this program is to assist parents as they prepare their preschool child for academic success.

The READY program uses the Alvin ISD Book Bus as a mobile classroom to deliver instruction to parents of preschoolers in English and Spanish, free of charge, and close to their neighborhoods.

How does the READY program work?

Lessons are delivered by a certified (retired or stay home) teacher. The teacher will deliver a highly structured curriculum in English or Spanish for an hour every week for 15 weeks in a location that is at a walking distance from the parents' homes

The instructor models strategies that the parents can then practice with their children throughout the week. Technology is a fundamental tool used in this program and parents will be trained on how to engage and support their children in the
use of Imagine Learning at home. Imagine Leaning is an
award-winning language and literacy software program that features interactive content, including activities, videos, songs, and games. It's research-based, instructional differentiated, and incredibly fun to use.

The Ready curriculum emphasizes language development and introduction of early literacy skills. Parents review concepts with the instructor and then they practice strategies to expose their children to early literacy skills such as:

Book knowledge

  • Letter recognition
  • Phonological and phonemic awareness
  • Early writing skills

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"I love the variety of activities. It is very nice having all the supplies ready for me to teach. It is also great to know what to teach my child to prepare her for kindergarten. This program is very helpful. Over the few weeks of the program my daughter is excited about reading. She will now pick up a book and try to read it to her little sister by using the pictures as clues. She will also point out letters and words that she has learned. I am feeling a little better about sending her off to kindergarten. I wish the program started a few years ago, would be interesting to see how much she would have progressed. I feel this is a great program to guide parents. I have been telling all my other friends and neighbors about it", Haley Endler - daughter Gianna Endler

"This program is an answer to prayer for our family. For those of us stuck in the middle that don't qualify for public pre k but can't afford private preschool this gives our kids the opportunity to get a head start on their education while also interacting with other children their age. The activity book is great. The activities are fun and educational. The schedule provides me with the structure I need to fit the activities and lessons into our day to day schedule. All the materials are provided for us which means we don't have to worry about not having what we need to accomplish the days lessons. We make the time and everything else has been provided. I am glad my child is being able to become familiar with Imagine Learning on the provided iPad so when he starts kindergarten he will know exactly what to do. He is learning while having fun. I can not say enough great things about this program.Thank you", Cheryl White, Mom to Austin White
