Program Overview
At Alfalit International, we believe in reaching and teaching as many people as possible with love and compassion. We hold ourselves accountable for delivering quality programs that produce life-changing results. Most importantly, we believe in literacy for all.
Alfalit offers various classes to all ages at no cost to the student. We partner with local businesess to make these programs possible.
We are doing some of our best work right here at home. In South Florida, Alfalit Conversational English (ACE) classes, are expanding—to provide more immigrant residents the opportunity to learn to speak basic English and more fully adjust to their adopted homeland. We also serve the Haitian and Latino
communities to provide literacy classes in Creole and Spanish.
The work we do goes beyond the classroom. In the
Dominican Republic, many graduates of our programs go on to enroll in apprenticeships to learn trades such as shoe making and cosmetology.
When our students finish class for the day, they're leaving with more an education—they're leaving with the chance for a
better life.
Alfalit International changes lives in 15 countries and the United States. Through a well-trained and constantly updated affiliate system, our teaching model is used in conjunction with local customs to best meet the needs of individuals, their families and communities. Affiliate organizations recruit, train and monitor volunteer teachers to provide Alfalit's programs in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and Europe.
Alfalit provides classes to students in their own communities… In churches, offices buildings, community centers, under a mango
tree, in an abandoned building, or in someone's backyard. Wherever illiteracy exists, Alfalit goes.
Our teachers and students are astoundingly resourceful. In rural
areas where materials might be scarce, "blackboards" can be huge chunks of slate and rocks and coveted boxes can be used as chairs.
Rather than leave their children unattended, mothers breastfeed their babies during lessons while their older children can be heard playing in the classroom. The dedication of our students and volunteer teachers to make education a priority
inspires us every day.
