Program Overview
The Adult Literacy Program is designed to serve Ohio residents with developmental disabilities who wish to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills. Approved students receive a grant package to book interviews and 1:1 tutoring sessions with highly qualified educators or speech language therapists. Most sessions occur in-home or in a mutually agreed upon neutral location such as the public library. Tutors work in partnership with adult learners and sometimes their families to establish goals that are grounded in the Big 5 components of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

“I love the direction this program has given us in helping C with her future goals. We never would have understood the depth of her interests had it not been for this program! We are eternally grateful that DSACO gave C this opportunity. We've also learned a lot ourselves, both about how she learns and the importance of continuing her education in her adult years."
“Wonderful to finally learn how to read. I could not read before and now I have an interest and some skills in reading. I feel much more aware of things around me because I can read what they are. This program has been life changing!"
“J has grown an incredible amount confidence in his reading and sounding out unknown words. He has never shown this much confidence! J expressed interest in reading to children and will begin monthly visits to a local school next week. This opportunity would have never become a reality without this program and J's dedicated tutor. We are thrilled and J is super proud of himself."
