Program Overview

The Adult Literacy Program at Butler County Community College makes sure that the adults at all educational levels in the communities we serve have access to instruction in reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills. We also offer instruction in GED Preparation and financial literacy to prepare learners with skills that will help them successfully transition into the workplace or post-secondary education.

Instruction is offered at the BC3 Butler and Cranberry campuses. Additionally there are classes in the city of Butler, Butler CareerLink and Deshon Place at the Butler VA Medical Center.

Beginning in July of 2018 Adult Literacy at Butler County Community College expanded to cover both Butler and Mercer counties with our sub-grantee Grove City Education Center for Adults serving those in Mercer County.

Our vision for the future is to continue to provide fundamental skills in math reading, writing , ESL, GED preparation, financial and computer literacy, while expanding our classes that prepare students for the workforce and post-secondary education. We will work with local in-demand industries to provide students the skills they will need to successfully obtain and maintain a career. We will also work with our county prisons to assist in a successful reentry by offering GED classes in the prisons. All the while we will celebrate our student's successes.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Beth started attending our High School Equivalency classes to earn her GED right before COVID hit and completed her GED during the height of COVID. Beth started attending in-person class and made the switch to distance learning. She completed and returned packets sent to her by the program and attended online classes. During this time she was also supported by one- on-one learning by her instructor. Through her persistence she received her GED. She went on to Butler County Community College and this spring earned an Associates Degree in Parks and Recreation and is currently working for a State Park. Beth credits the help she received from the Adult Literacy program for encouraging her to stick with the learning process. Her success has inspired her husband to also attend Adult Literacy classes to get his GED and he is well on the way. He has already passed three of the subject areas tests.
