Program Overview
The Campbell County Public Library System offers myriad Adult/Family Educational Programs that teach early children's literacy, teen
literacy, adult literacy, and math skills. Through the Outreach Department a variety of skills and humanities informational opportunities are taught onsite and offsite to a variety of age groups. Technical assistance is provided for patrons with computers in one-on-one sessions. The Reference Department also aids in learning technical skills in the Makerspace for people seeking to increase their job skills and for personal development.
Programs for children from birth to 19 years old enhance reading skills, a love of research, and writing skills. Reading programs are designed for specific age groups of children as a means of cultivating their reading skills outside of the school classroom. This enables those children that may have some reading disabilities to improve their capabilities and stay on track. Our programs
stimulate children's interest and appreciation of reading and learning by introducing the world of children's literature in an environment that
encourages creativity, exploration and intellectual growth for Pre-K to grade six. Our teen programs stimulate young adults' interest, appreciation and use of the library by offering cultural, informational and recreational resources through both an inviting library
environment and outreach contact for grade seven to age 19.
Our Adult and Family Literacy initiatives offer opportunities for learning to children and their families as a unit and for adults individually. Our Programming Coordinator provides numerous programs that offer insight into reading and writing skills through professional authors, business owners, and skills coaches. Furthermore, math skills, measurements, and following directions are all taught with our portable kitchen as students learn to make nutritious meals. These programs are most often led by the library but are at times part of a joint effort through collaboration with other agencies.
The library's Reference Department provides hands on instruction to adults that want to learn more about computer skills and Makerspace based technologies. One on one opportunities for learning a new skill or improving an old one are scheduled with the Reference Department staff on a routine basis. Job skills ranging from laser printer operation to podcast operations are offered year-round. These skill sets include learning to understand written instructions, communication, and critical thinking. In the one-on-one sessions patrons can learn to use computer programs that can advance their communication talents, or they can enhance proficiencies already maintained.
Students can also learn how to write clear directions while creating their own projects in the Makerspace.
The Outreach Department brings the library's learning rich environment to older residents in their homes and at assisted living facilities
in our community. Through the placement of small onsite libraries and book clubs led by the library, older residents in Campbell County can continue to exercise their minds through reading and conversation. Without this program many elderly residents of our area would not have access to the books that they need to remain focused and alert as they age.
