HOLA Adult ELL Course

Program Overview

HOLA Lakeway hosts ELL classes in accordance with its goal of facilitating positive integration of immigrant communities into the greater fabric of Hamblen County and the Lakeway area. HOLA seeks to give a voice to those in our community for whom there exists no recourse for communicating their needs. The demand for English language skills is urgent for some within our community, and our hope is that the ELL classes will able to address that need.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Melanie (volunteer teachers): I think these classes give [students] their voice back. They're able to go to school and talk to teachers; I work at East High and I think a lot of times teachers are very hesitant to call Hispanic parents because of the language barrier, and we don't always have a translator, so if a parent learns English they can get more information about school and how their children are doing in school, so it's definitely a plus all the way around.

Edi (ELL student): The abilities we learn in this program can be used in different places – at stores, at the doctor's, at schools – places where you have opportunities to communicate, but in these places you always have to speak English, so if you don't understand you have to remain silent. But here we're learning more and more words, so thank you for this program, and I have faith that I will be able to continue moving forward with more ideas and knowledge of English.
