Program Overview

In collaboration with Wilbur Wright Community College and Northwest Community Church, Onward House offers computerized levels 1 through 4 English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults in the mornings and evenings. Wright College provides the instruction while Onward House and Northwest Community Church recruits and enrolls participants. After assessed by Wright, participants are placed in one of four levels; Level 1 is at Northwest Community Church and levels 2, 3 and 4 are at Onward House.

Also in collaboration with Wilbur Wright Community College, we offer GED classes in the evenings. We also offer one on one resume tailoring and job search help, citizenship classes, immigration workshops as well as a volunteer instructor led ESL conversation study group for participants who want to practice their English skills.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

*Maria came to the Onward House Adult Education program with the intention of registering for the ESL course and decided to first go after her GED. With the help of her instructor Clarisse and her classmates, five months of hard work and dedication paid off.

"The classes were very good, Onward Neighborhood House personnel were always very kind and I appreciated that. I really enjoyed the teacher, the class and my classmates, I actually kind of miss it."

Maria has now earned her GED and is planning not only on returning to Onward House to take the ESL course, but on moving forward once she feels confident enough in her language skills to start attending college classes and pursue her goals for the future. Part of the Wright College and Onward House Adult Education partnership involves bringing the students to Wright College's Campus to inspire students to continue their education after attaining the ESL or GED goals.

"I realized I needed to do this for my future and my children's future. They see me now, getting my GED, how driven I am to learn the language, and I want to make sure they know how important education is so I do this for them, to inspire them too. My dream is to become an elementary school teacher and hopefully after a little bit of time I will be able to pursue that."
