Program Overview

The program goal is to provide a high-quality adult education program that enhances participant learning. It reflects community and learner needs, incorporates employment opportunities and postsecondary attainment. DHDC provides ESL classes for adults in SW Detroit and is aligned with opportunities for employment, postsecondary education and training. Adults with low basic skills have access to clear and effective pathways that move them toward obtaining needed skills and credentials. DHDC utilizes Burlington English software that includes supplemental materials and activities that reinforce experiential learning.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

One particular participant of DHDC's program had recently began the process of becoming a personal home-care worker through the State of Michigan. Through their instruction, not only did their English improve, but their self-confidence has grown to the point where they are now confident enough to enter the workforce. Their prior experience had only been in childcare through friends. DHDC's ESL program has not only given this participant the skill set necessary to enter the workforce, but has provided the confidence to enter a field that can be extremely intimidating to non-English speakers.
