Program Overview

Since 1994, our Family Support Center in Adelphi, Maryland, provides parenting education, adult basic education, and employment readiness services to families with young children in Prince George's County. Our Family Support Center's goals are to provide preventative and supportive services to families that simultaneously promote the healthy, happy development of young children as well as strengthen parents' ability to thrive.

The Family Support Center offers a warm and welcoming refuge where parents can participate in leadership training and education classes, find tools to help advocate for their children's health and education, and enjoy daily "Parents and Children Together" time where they can put their parenting skills into action with their children.

We offer all of our services at no cost to families, including our on-site child care and door-to-door transportation services. At the Center, adults improve their socioeconomic opportunities through support services for job readiness; literacy skills, including GED, Adult Basic Education (ABE) and ESL; computer literacy; career exploration/assessment; resume writing; and life skills - and demonstrate understanding of positive parenting techniques.

We are located in the basement of Cool Springs Elementary School.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Marta came to the United States from Guatemala with only a third grade education and no ability to speak English. It was a very difficult time for her as she adjusted to a new culture, tried to understand a new language, and struggled with her own illiteracy. But Marta wanted more for her children. She set out seeking opportunities and found the Family Support Center. She took advantage of the Center's classes to improve her English and her education and is now on her way to earning her GED. She reports that she just went to her daughter's parent-teacher conference and, for the very first time, did not need any help with translation. In fact, she was helping other Spanish-speaking moms
