Program Overview

The West Philadelphia Action for Early Learning Initiative (AFEL) is a Drexel University-led collaboration of community stakeholders and social service and education agencies working together to create an education support system for children and families in the West Philadelphia Promise Zone – a high-need, high poverty area. The Initiative aims to build awareness about how high quality early childhood education increases children's life-long success while improving the quality of childcare providers and linking Pre-Ks to Kindergartens to ensure seamless transitions for families. It also supports Pre-K to 3rd grade literacy instruction so children are better prepared for Kindergarten and reading on grade level by the end of third grade.

"I am so grateful for Action for Early Learning's leadership around early childhood education. Not only has it helped my son, but through continued outreach and awareness, it will help other children in the community."
