Program Overview

826DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting DC students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. We're on a mission to help students develop a lasting, positive relationship with writing. We envision a future in which every young person in DC is able to confidently use writing to communicate their experiences, explore new ideas, and enjoy the creative process.

We offer free, year-round writing and publishing programs for DC students. We host these programs at our Columbia Heights writing center, in schools, and in community spaces across the city. We're a team of lifelong writers and educators who recognize that for any individual to fully step into their own power, writing must be part of their skillset. For more information on our in-school, after-school, and community programs, and how to enroll, please go to 826dc.org/programs.

In addition, 826DC is sustained by volunteers who are committed members of the DC community, and who participate year-round as mentors, teachers, and companions to brilliant young writers. Interested volunteers are invited to learn more at 826dc.org/volunteer.
