Program Overview

Mission Statement:
We teach literacy skills in English to empower adults for successful engagement in the home, workplace, and community.

Eligible students are York County residents ages 18 and older regardless of race, creed, color, gender, national origin or socio-economic status.

YCLC is providing a spectrum of literacy and language building programs: Adult Reading (AR), English as a Second Language (ESL), Next Step, Family Literacy, and Literacy in the Workplace. YCLC provides assessment for student's educational level, development of their career pathways, informs them of community resources available and refers them to other human services and/or educational agencies.

Adult Reading Program offers the basics to improve reading, writing, spelling, math, computer and comprehension skills as well as multi-level classroom instruction to pass the High School Equivalency exam (GED or HiSET) and earn their High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). For many of these students earning a HSED is a crucial step in obtaining employment.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Program helps adults who do not speak English as their first languages learn how to read, write, speak, and understand English in everyday life situation. The ESL program students are from 62 different countries. Many of the ESL students have an education from their native county and are earnest about learning English in order to become productive members of the York community.

Next Step Program is designed to offer YCLC clients support services that are a crucial part of their success. These services are adapted to the individual client's goals and may include referrals and assistance with finding job openings, writing resumes, interviewing effectively, applying for continuing education, finding resources to pay for tuition, fees and other expenses in pursuing skills development or job training, obtaining a driver's license, pursuing US Citizenship, and navigating healthcare.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"If it were not for YCLC's High School Equivalency (HSE) Program, and earning my GED, I would not be considering pursuing an engineering degree."
