Program Overview

Founded in 1972, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford (LVGH) is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America. Recognized as the largest private provider of adult literacy programs in the Greater Hartford area, we are known for our cutting edge, student-centered, technology-enriched curriculum that successfully meets the needs of very low literate adults. Local literacy providers have come to rely on us to serve this population, whose learning needs cannot be met in the large-group, fast-paced instruction model typical to most literacy providers. Founded as a small, grassroots, volunteer tutoring service, we now provide small group instruction, led by trained volunteers, to over 800 students in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Basic Literacy, Digital Literacy, GED, Citizenship, Math, and job readiness skills. We offer seven levels of instruction in ESOL and Basic Literacy, from Foundations through GED and Transition to College. Unlike many volunteer-based programs, our groups follow a recognized curriculum; our students are regularly tested; and, our volunteers are rigorously trained. These factors combine to provide a highly professional program, embedded with significant accountability measures. Classes are held at our Hartford Literacy Center, Wickham Literacy Center, East Hartford; and Wintonbury Literacy Center, Bloomfield. This site is a collaborative effort between LVGH and the Prosser Public Library, Bloomfield.
