Cheatham County Title I Schools are hoping to partner with our public library by holding a county wide Parent Academy Workshop. During this workshop we will introduce parents to resources that are available for them and their children at the library. The We Both Read series would give parents an additional resource to use. Parents can work with struggling readers as they check out these unique books to use at home. This series has been shown to increase both fluency and comprehension. This series dramatically increases parent involvement in re/ading, especially parents of reluctant or struggling readers. It has one page that the parent / tutor reads and one page that the child reads. The child's page is easier to read. This means that the child is able to see / hear text at a higher reading level modeled while being able to participate with text at the reading level of the struggling reader. This series meets Common Core standards and gives the child opportunity to read more nonfiction books about Space, Bats, and other topics that cover Science and Social Studies curriculum as well as nonfiction stories. During the Parent Academy, parents and students will be given information on how reading fiction and nonfiction books are alike and different and strategies which will help to build fluency and comprehension as well as reader interest and confidence.
