Program Overview

Organization Name: St. Paul Adult Learning Center

Summary of Program:

St. Paul Adult Learning Center is a community-based, non-profit organization that has empowered minds and changed lives since 1983. By offering education to adults and adolescents with a holistic approach that includes support services, we seek to be a sign of hope and a place of safety, affirmation, and challenge for the underprivileged. Faithful to this mission,
we seek to enable students to overcome the burdens of poverty and self-doubt. SPALC aspires to strengthen self-esteem, self-confidence, and promote a wholesome self-discipline. We also promote moral values along with a solid work ethic. We focus on academic skill improvement, which is key. However, other components have been added to stimulate growth and development socially and emotionally.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

My name is Breanika Marie Tolliver, and I am 18 years old. I would like to thank you for supporting my education at the St. Paul Adult Learning Center! I can truly say that having an opportunity to attend St. Paul, was a tremendous blessing for me. I have had many challenges to overcome, but because of your generosity, I now have a chance to see my way to a better future!
Growing up, my home environment was not good. My mom was having tremendous issues, so she really did not pay attention to me. So I ended up making a lot of bad decisions because I had no real connection at home. I got pregnant with my first child at 15 years old! Then only 11 months later, I was pregnant with my second child! I became so discouraged and confused about life that I just dropped out of school.
My dad then stepped in and had me to come and live with him. At his encouragement, we sought enrollment at St. Paul. It was truly a God sent moment in my life! The staff was so helpful with my academic challenges that I quickly moved to the fast track program and was able to graduate in only 12 months! I also learned so many things about life, and how God intends for me to live.
I now feel I have a fresh start on life! I am now employed as a cashier at Circle K, and will be enrolling this fall at BRCC for nursing! I have grown so much and have so much confidence. I can't begin to say how wonderful I feel! Thank you again; I can truly say you helped to save a life!!!
Sincerely, Breanika Marie Tolliver

Program’s Demographics/Metrics

The Center is embedded in a neighborhood (Eden Park) that
has 47.5% of 18 through 24 year olds lacking a high school diploma and has a 36% poverty rate. Most of the students we serve are considered "at-risk" and they come to us steeped in all that implies. They have consistently arrived at our doors with 3rd to 5th trade skill levels in the core subjects of reading, math, and language arts. We find that most also lack
mental and emotional maturity and an internal locus of control.
They are deficient in skills when seeking employment, further education, or job training.

Since the fiscal year 2007-2008, more than 97% of all St. Paul
students assessed have increased one grade level in a core academic subject in the same academic year. Of that number, 78% have increased at least four (4) or more grade levels in the same academic year. For the past four academic years (2011-12thru 2015-16) St. Paul had one of the highest average among all East Baton Rouge Parish Adult Education programs for students with a literacy functioning level increase!
