Program Overview

South Coast Literacy Council (SCLC) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to assist adults in south Orange County to acquire English language skill. We provide free English classes in multiple locations throughout south Orange County meeting in libraries, churches and community centers. Most of these organizations donate space to SCLC. All board members and all tutors volunteer their time; there are no paid positions in the organization.

Nearly all are now virtual, but we hope to have many in-person soon.

As students acquire English proficiency, they can become active and helpful participants in the communities in which they live. Importantly, they are empowered to live their personal lives with greater confidence and success. As ability and confidence increase, SCLC's s students can participate fully in their own economic endeavors, their education, their health care, and their children's futures.

SCLC was established in 1970 and has been assisting adults to acquire English skill since that time. SCLC trains volunteers to tutor, and today we have over 25 tutoring sites from Huntington Beach to San Clemente. SCLC has over 150 active volunteers.
