Program Overview

Rising Readers helps approximately 300-400 rising first through third grade students in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) who have been identified as Limited English Proficient. International House, in partnership with CMS, implements this program each summer.who come from families living on low incomes and who are learning English as a second language.

The program is centered around small-group learning, and in 2017 included 36 tutors who worked directly with students under the instruction of experienced CMS teachers. The full-day program is free for all students and features a literacy component in the morning and a science enrichment in the afternoon.

With intensive instruction that is interactive and offered in small groups, students keep up their literacy progress over the summer break. It fills a learning gap, helps students continue to develop socialization skills and readies the young learners for the next school year. In addition to the instruction, the students receive meals, book bags and school supplies.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"Rising Readers was the best way I could spend my summer. It gave me the chance to connect with some amazing children and watch their incredible progress. This program helped them to focus on their literacy skills so they would be ready for school in the fall. While we worked on literacy and science, we also had so much fun!"

~ Kristen Moore-Garcia, tutor in the Rising Readers at Briarwood Academy
