For many refugees, basic education is the bridge to becoming
self-sufficient. As many of them arrive with very little education and limited English skills, the Refugee Adult Basic Education- Job Readiness Training project equips them with practical skills that will assist them to rebuild their lives and find gainful employment.
As refugees undergo the project's curriculum, they are immersed in a dialogue-based learning environment so that they can improve English speaking, writing, listening and comprehension skills through job-related tasks such as
resume-building, job applications and interviews. This not only allows them to gain a basic fluency in American workplace culture, but also, helps them gain the confidence needed to communicate with others and navigate in their new communities.
The mission of the IRC is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future.
