Program Overview

The Mississippi Children’s Museum’s (MCM) Planting the Seeds to Read family literacy program provides a comprehensive approach to improving the literacy proficiency, engagement and confidence of underserved, under-performing kindergarten-aged children in the Jackson Metropolitan area. This seven (7) week, after-school program seeks to introduce 25 families each year to family-oriented activities designed to develop crucial literacy skills and a love of reading, and promote and emphasize the importance of language development and families reading together. The program is designed to provide parents and grandparents with the necessary skills to actively engage their children in reading, and help them to understand the crucial link between quality communication and interaction with their children and the development of literacy skills and increased interest in reading. Participants are selected according to four primary determinants, including willingness of the participants' principal to participate in the program, eligibility for free and reduced lunch, demographic information and low literacy test scores.
