Program Overview

Partners in Reading (PAR) offers basic literacy services to adults who have conversational English ability and who live in San José. PAR also offers small-group tutoring for ESL learners who have minimal conversation skills. Trained volunteer tutors customize one-to-one and small group literacy instruction in reading, writing, SL, and computer skills. Instructional topics include real-life goals with a focus on work, health, community support and involvement, parenting, family needs, financial literacy and civic awareness. Learners set their own goals depending on their needs with help from their volunteer tutors.

The San José Public Library also has a high school diploma program with Career Online High School for adults 19 and over who have completed at least the 8th grade. All classes are online. Students have a maximum of 18 months to complete the program. Visit www.sjpl.org/cohs to learn more and to take the self-assessment.

PAR has a partnership with Evergreen Valley College to offer ESL classes for the Spring Semester to build basic conversation and reading skills.
