Program Overview

The MMFLC honors and continues the work of renowned literacy expert and longtime faculty member, Maryann Manning, Ed.D. The MMFLC housed in the UAB School of Education brings together expertise from many areas of literacy to provide services to children and families, serves as a coordination point for research, and provides a community hub of services to promote a heightened level of literacy for families. The pivotal location and accessibility of resources at UAB positions the MMFLC to better serve families and provide leadership in the region for literacy work. The MMFLC makes an important difference in enhancing and facilitating the national discussion on what works in literacy instruction. Utilizing expanded networks and partnerships and understanding that a literate population improves economic conditions for families and the community, the MMFLC focuses on maximizing educational opportunities for families to improve work and/or college readiness.
