Program Overview

Improving Adult Literacy makes our community stronger. LiteracyCNY provides instruction to adults that read at or below a 6th grade reading level, targeting adults that have the lowest literacy levels in our community. LiteracyCNY offers small group instruction provided by credentialed instructors and supplemented with individualized tutoring, and matches adult learners with professionally trained

and managed volunteer tutors who assist them to become literate and obtain the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency.

LiteracyCNY provides certified training workshops that prepare tutors in language instruction for Adult Basic Education/Literacy (ABE) students, and English Language Learners (ELL).
LiteracyCNY also trains volunteers to lead oral English practice conversation groups and to work in Syracuse City School District and OCM BOCES classrooms providing supplemental tutoring for students who are struggling.
