Program Overview

PRE-LITERACY SCREENINGS FOR 3-5 YR OLDS

The Get Ready to Read screening helps determine a child's reading and writing readiness.
Get Ready to Read! is an early literacy screening program designed to help parents and early education and child care professionals make sure that young children have the skills they need to be ready to learn to read and write. The goal of Get Ready to Read! is to screen 3-5 year-olds for pre-reading skills before they enter kindergarten and provide skill-strengthening activities to ensure their reading success. In partnership with National Center for Learning Disabilities our goal is to ensure that all children have opportunities to become successful readers.
Test results identify what step (on a five-step continuum) the child has reached on the path to reading. The 25 question assessment incorporates visual and auditory items that allow children to demonstrate their skills in:
Print knowledge
Book knowledge
Phonological awareness
Phonics
Get Ready to Read Screening goal:
Determine children's reading and writing readiness
Build early literacy skills
Identify youngsters who may need more in-depth assessment
Ensure children are entering school ready for successful language and literacy development

READING SCREENINGS FOR 1-3 GRADERS
ALLC partners with the local libraries to provide free screenings to students in kindergarten through third grade. These free screenings help to identify where, on the learning to read continuum, there is a breakdown in skills necessary for successful reading. Our screenings check for Phonological Awareness, the Alphabetic Principle, Phonics both beginning and advanced, fluency and comprehension.
The screening takes about 30 minutes. You will receive the results of the screening along with free packets of fun activities you can play with your child to strengthen areas of need.
