Program Overview
Literacy Plus is a free program of the Hayward Public Library. Established in 1985, we have helped over 3,500 adults learn to read and write or improve their literacy skills. We are a free literacy program funded by the City of Hayward and through generous contributions from corporations, foundations and the Hayward Community. In Literacy Plus, adult learners improve their ability to read, write and spell. This leads to positive changes such as higher self-esteem, better jobs, and the ability to participate in their children's education—plus the gift of being able to enjoy and appreciate the written word. Literacy Plus provides one-to one tutoring in reading, writing, spelling and basic math, small group classes, computer-assisted learning, regular student reassessments, and tutoring skills workshops. We also provide services to children and families, including the Homework Support Center, a homework help center for children grades 1-5, our Families For Literacy Program, providing monthly story times plus free books and quality children's magazines to our adult learners with children under age 5, and services to local non-profit agencies, including story times and distribution of free books and other learning materials.Education services
