Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Hasan came to the United States from Turkey several years ago, beginning in Chicago then moving to Missouri, New Jersey and ultimately here to Delaware. He lives with his children, one of whom is studying medicine at the University of Virginia, in a home he purchased on a golf course. Most impressively, perhaps, Hasan manages a home-based book selling business wherein he purchases books that are in demand at a good price, cleans them up, then resells them on his own and through Amazon. Using an app which lets him know which books are most in demand, Hasan buys "books from Goodwill or the library or thrift stores and I clean the books with alcohol" to get them ready for sale. The basement of his home serves as his office and warehouse. "I sell all types of books like fiction, nonfiction and healthy cookbooks." Though he supplements his income by working as a driver for Amazon and other delivery companies, "I don't need too much money" Hasan notes. Hasan is grateful for his tutor Paula whom he calls "very energetic, very talkative, and very helpful. She has patience and tolerance. She's like a mother to me. She smiles all the time!" The pair began working together in person just before the pandemic but have continued their studies virtually. Paula considers Hasan "a special person." In Turkey, Hasan was a professor of religious studies with a PhD who also worked managing the dormitories at his school as well as for the Turkish government. Here, he aspires to grow his online selling business as well as to become a chaplain "for a prison, hospital, or university. I like to support people. If I see people with problems my heart is affected an I want to help."
