Program Overview

The mission of the Literacy Council of Grand Island is to teach our students, free of charge, the literacy skills necessary to communicate, grow and thrive within their community. We provide group classes, one-on-one tutoring, and access to self-paced ESL and literacy computer programs and student workbooks. Additionally, we have a Community Connection Center open to the public where we encourage any individuals in the community to come in and connect and converse with our students.

English language learners, mainly refugees and immigrants, have comprised 90% of our students since the 1990's, when Nebraska was designated as a refugee resettlement destination.

As a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization, the Literacy Council is funded solely through grants and the generous donations of individual donors, corporations, and foundations.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Literacy Council of Grand Island (LCofGI) is to teach our students the literacy skills necessary to communicate, grow, and thrive within our community. We teach a variety of literacy skills, including English literacy, financial literacy, health literacy, digital literacy, and citizenship. Instruction is offered to everyone free of charge, and regardless of age, income, background, race, or religion. Promoting literacy builds stronger communities, encourages prosperity, and increases opportunities. We also consider it our secondary mission to build bridges that unite our diverse community.
