Program Overview

The Literacy Council of Buncombe County provides one-on-one and small group tutoring through three programs.

  • Adult Education provides reading, writing, spelling, math, and GED instruction to adults who read at or below a basic skills level
  • English for Speakers of Other Languages provides oral English, reading, writing, and civics instruction to adults who have immigrated to the U.S. from around the world
  • The Augustine Project provides tutors to low-income children who read, write, and/or spell below grade level.

Instruction is provided by trained volunteer tutors. The Literacy Council serves approx. 350 students annually.
