Program Overview

We strive to provide our students with the most attentive instruction and are working with volunteers to provide personalized tutoring free of charge outside the classroom. Our classes include instructional time, one on one tutoring, and computer skill instruction needed to take the new computerized GED. We have a success rate of around 80% and have had many students go on to complete all parts of their GED since we began courses in 2012.

We are the only program to offer GED in Spanish in our region and have students from all over Northeast and Central Georgia enrolled with us.

Mission Statement

Our Vision: ALCES seeks to create a thriving, unified community where people of all ages and cultures value, teach, and learn from one another.

Our Mission: ALCES is an organization dedicated to helping the Athens Latino community become a part of the larger Athens area community while preserving and enriching its own heritage. ALCES furthers that aim by offering education and services that will help people to advance themselves in society and make contacts within the local community. These include programs such as language education, immigration assistance, and advocacy.

Hours of operation: varies

Cost info: ALCES offers GED preparation programs in Spanish and English during the weekday and weekend. We serve up to 60 students a week and have plans to expand up to 200 students with grant funding over the next 3 years. We offer four classes corresponding to the five separate sections of the GED; reading and writing which are combined into a language class, social studies, science and math.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

In the past, I attended other institutions for help with the GED but none were like ALCES. My experience with ALCES was unforgettable. Everyone of my teachers made the best of each class. Thanks to my Language Arts teacher, I was able to improve my reading and writing. Also, I appreciate my Social Studies teacher for all of her great advice. Thanks to her, I learned a lot about our history. I was able to earn a very high score on the Social Studies portion of the test.

Thanks to ALCES and their great and dedicated teachers, I fulfilled my goal to get my GED and I am proud to say that I did it while earning very high scores on the test itself.

Thanks ALCES!

Maria
