Program Overview

The Head Start program, which is known as Fannin County Head Start began as a summer school program in 1965. It was one of the first Head Start programs in the nation. It continued as a summer school program until the early 1970's. One Head Start classroom with 20 students was added as part of Bonham ISD. The program expanded over the years and currently has eight classrooms with 139 students. There are four classrooms serving 3-year old students and four classrooms serving 4-year old students. Each classroom is staffed with one teacher and at least one teacher assistant. In Head Start the education component is a very important part the program but other services are also provided. The children are provided medical, dental, mental health, and nutritional services. Parent involvement is a major part of the program. Head Start serves the entire family. Training for parents includes but is not limited to areas such as parenting skills, financial matters, child abuse and developmentally appropriate practices. Additional assistance is offered to parents who are interested in obtaining their GED. Opening the World of Learning(OWL) curriculum is used in Head Start and Pre-K. Head Start uses Work Sampling, an assessment tool, which is administered three times each year. The information gathered from these assessments is used for Fannin County Head Start program planning. Admission to Head Start and pre-k are based on family income. The tuition-based pre-k program does not require any income verification. The programs on the Bailey Inglish campus are making a difference in children's lives and helping prepare them for kindergarten.
