Program Overview
Mount St. Mary High School was originally built to educate young ladies who sought instruction by the Sisters of Mercy, is today a coeducational school and focuses more broadly on education of students and community members. Our commitment to education is lifelong and expands beyond our walls through important outreach programs that extend our mission further.Mount St. Mary High School is located in one of the poorer sections of Oklahoma City. Information from the 2010 U.S. Census illustrates the issues facing the community. It is over 30 percent Hispanic with a large portion of this group speaking Spanish as their primary language. A full 43 percent of those over the age of 25 living in the area have less than a high school education. Fifty-six percent of households have an annual income under $25,000 with 23 percent living on less than $10,000 per year. Twenty-nine percent live below the poverty line which is above the U.S. average. Mount St. Mary's community outreach initiative, El Centro de Oportunidades, exists to help Hispanic members of the community increase their English proficiency thereby providing them a necessary skill they can use to break the cycle of poverty in which they currently live. The cycle can be broken when adults can secure better jobs and parents can help their children with homework and be more involved in their children's education. GED courses are also offered as another way to help with this process. In addition, the project works to help Hispanics integrate into the broader society by providing citizenship training classes and hosting various events during the year that educate participants about the various opportunities and resources available to them in the community. This program serves approximately 200-300 adults and almost 200 children in the child care area per school year. In addition to the childcare, those children are also offered homework assistance, tumbling classes, and a robotics team class.Cost Info
