Early Literacy Matters (ELM) was funded by the Children's Board of Hillsborough County in September, 2002 and has been at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) since February 1, 2004. The program has served more than 500 preschool teachers and 6,000 children since its inception. In FY13, Hillsborough Community College and The Early Learning Coalition partnered together to develop the Early Literacy Initiative Program. The program helps prepare 4-5 year old children for kindergarten and increase their literacy skills through our Literacy Initiative Program. In FY13, we successfully worked with over 200 children and their families in our community, specifically focusing on the target neighborhoods of West Tampa, East Tampa and Sulphur Springs. The program identifies children who are behind in the skills necessary to learn how to read and provided them with weekly multisensory literacy intervention using the Nemours BrightStart! Literacy Program. In addition, worked with families to get them involved in their child’s education providing them with information and strategies to increase literacy skills. This combined approach of classroom intervention and parent involvement better prepares children for kindergarten and ongoing academic success.
