Program Overview

Creating a Flow of Literacy

How do children in poverty get sustained access to literacy? The goal of this project is to promote an ongoing flow of literacy activity in families' day-to-day lives—access to books, to tutors or reading buddies, or to engaging after-school and summer programs. To accomplish this flow at the community level, we work on developing capacity in local champions and leaders who know the specific needs of neighborhoods. We take special interest in fostering leadership for isolated neighborhoods—which may be both geographically and psychologically isolated. These neighborhoods are likely to slip through the cracks and be under-served. We embrace solutions based in collaborations among businesses, schools, libraries, non-profits, and individuals who share the project's goal. As we promote the ongoing flow of literacy, we will conduct research in community literacy and use it to inform others in Colorado and nationwide.

Hours of operation: Monday-Friday, 9-12; Monday & Thursday, 4-7

Cost info: We provide an informal library of 500+ titles for infants, preschoolers, elementary, middle school and high school students, and adults. Because we want to remove all barriers to access, we do not have overdue fines or fees. We also hold two weekly after school sessions that include simple snacks and craft activities. Finally, we hold free family events for this lower income neighborhood of 297 homes several times a year. Our current costs consist of books bought to answer children's requests, snacks for afternoon sessions, and costs associated with holding family events. Our only source of funds has been individual contributions and we are processing them through the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) Foundation. UNC serves as our host organization and we provide UNC support through research opportunities, students volunteering and through holding a master's level tutoring class on the premises.
