The Broadway Christian Church Summer Reading Program offers one-on-one tutoring to Cleveland's inner city, academically at risk students in the 1st to 6th grade. We have been doing this for the past 43 years. The individualized tutoring plans, drawn up daily by a Title 1 Teacher, a Reading Intervention Specialist and input from classroom teachers, are designed to enhance students reading skills and math skills when needed. Each year it attempts to specifically meet the needs of children failing, or at risk to fail the 3rd grade reading portion of the Ohio Achievement Assessment Test. We also will be working with younger children who already are showing a risk for failing the test once they reach the 3rd grade.
The Reading Program runs for 5 weeks each summer during the month of July, from 9 am to 12 noon. The students receive an hour of one-on-one tutoring, an hour of computer lab, and an hour of Art classes.
To carry out the lesson plans that are drawn up daily by the professionals of the program, we use teens from the same neighborhood. They receive training prior to the program on how to administer the plans, work with children, how to handle behavior management and be role models. It is our goal to impact them by giving them job opportunities as tutors, a position which pays a small stipend. Also we hope that the program helps them to develop leadership and mentoring skills, a positive and strong work ethic and encourage them to start thinking about future career goals.
The Mission of the Broadway Christian Church Summer Reading Program is to provide free individualized lessons for at risk students in the community. We also seek to provide the teens of the community with opportunities to experience the work force in a positive way as hired tutors and to develop leadership skills.
Hours of operation: 9am to 12 pm
Cost info: The Broadway Christian Church Summer Reading Program serves inner city children and has always been free.
Student and Volunteer Success Stories
My daughter had difficulty reading and was advised of keeping her back in the first grade. Her teacher referred her to the Summer Reading Program and I am grateful for the opportunity. Over the past five weeks I have noticed a great improvement in my daughter's letter recognition, letter sounds and her handwriting. Along with getting a great foundation for reading, my daughter has shown such a spark for reading and found confidence that she hadn't shown before in her school work. I was lost and felt like a failure to my daughter because she struggled but was so excited and hopeful when she was accepted in the program.
A Proud Mother of an Amazing Scholar and Forever thankful for The Summer Reading Program.
